RULER: A Wellbeing Programme for Primary Schools

    Overview

RULER is an evidence-based programme designed at Yale University that teaches adults and children the skills of recognising, understanding, labelling, expressing, and regulating emotions. RULER combines whole-school professional development with a skill-building social-emotional learning programme for 4 to 11 year olds. The programme works to build emotional intelligence by teaching the skills of recognising, understanding, labelling, expressing, and regulating emotions to both adults and pupils within a school. The programme then leverages these skills to help schools create a positive climate for learning

    What is involved

Senior leaders attend sessions to find out more about the programme, its effect on teaching and learning, and the most effective strategies for its implementation. They are provided with a set of professional development materials in order to introduce the programme to teachers and support staff in their own settings. Schools can also opt to benefit from coaching visits led by RULER experts, to help them embed the approach and troubleshoot any challenges to implementation.
